Elijah and John the Baptist:

Preparing the Way of the Lord

Base Text: “And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.” (Matthew 11:14)
“Prepare the way for the Lord, make his paths straight.” (Matthew 3:3)

Introduction

God always raises prophetic voices in times of spiritual crisis. In the past, He raised Elijah to call Israel to repentance. Later, He sent John the Baptist, who came in the spirit and power of Elijah, preparing the hearts of the people to receive Jesus.

Development

Elijah faced a people divided between serving the Lord and following idolatry (1 Kings 18:21). He called them to make a clear decision. Similarly, John the Baptist did not preach pleasant messages but called the people to true repentance: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near” (Matthew 3:2).

Jesus declared that John was “Elijah who was to come” (Matthew 17:12-13), fulfilling the prophecy of Malachi 4:5.

According to Luke 1:17, John the Baptist came "in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to prepare the Lord a people well disposed." This shows that John was not literally Elijah, but he fulfilled the same prophetic mission, preparing the way for the coming of Jesus.

Today, we also receive the mission of preparing the way of the Lord — not only announcing His return but living in a way that others see Christ in us. As Paul said: “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1).

Application

Live in holiness, rejecting sin.
Be a voice that points to Jesus, not to yourself.
Defend truth and justice, even if it brings opposition.
Announce Christ’s return with faith and hope.

Prayer

“Lord, just as Elijah and John the Baptist prepared the people to hear You, help me to live in a way that my life also points to You. May my words and actions prepare hearts to receive Jesus. Amen.”

Wake Up, Heart

⚠️ A Warning to Our Generation

The truth is we are on the verge of harming ourselves, perhaps in the very next moments. We live distracted, hypnotized by fleeting pleasures and the seductions of the modern world.

“But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare... and into many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.” — 1 Timothy 6:9

While the phone vibrates and the internet calls, our ears close and our eyes grow blind. Business, money, vanity... all of it takes us away from the Word of our good and merciful God.

“This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.” — Matthew 15:8

We forget the purpose entrusted to us. We stray from the path and destroy ourselves, often without realizing it.

It is time to return to the first love, to the essence of our faith, to the true need of the soul: Jesus Christ.

“But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.” — Revelation 2:4

Jesus is at the door. And He calls us with urgency. There is no victory in the world that can outweigh the loss of eternity.

“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?” — Mark 8:36

May this text awaken hearts. Let us return to Him, while there is still time.

Sinceridade ou Aparência?

“E, assim, invalidastes, pela vossa tradição, o mandamento de Deus. Este povo honra-me com os lábios, mas o seu coração está longe de mim; e em vão me adoram, ensinando doutrinas que são preceitos de homens.” — Mateus 15:6b–9

🔎 Contexto da Palavra

Jesus estava confrontando os fariseus e escribas, homens religiosos que se preocupavam mais com regras e tradições humanas do que com a vontade de Deus. Eles exigiam práticas externas, mas negligenciavam o que era essencial: um coração sincero diante do Senhor. Cristo revela aqui uma verdade dura, mas necessária: não é a forma externa da religião que agrada a Deus, mas a devoção verdadeira, interior, cheia de amor e obediência.
